Ephphatha: Be Opened

Unknown preacher

Drawing on Jesus’ healing of a deaf and mute man and on his own reluctant beginning as an altar server, the preacher interprets “Ephphatha—Be opened” as Christ’s continuing invitation in the Divine Liturgy. Christ’s compassionate touch opens believers to God’s will, commandments, healing, service, and the proclamation of the Gospel, while assuring the isolated that they are known and loved.

Ephphatha: Be Opened

Rev. Fr. Mesrop Ash

Reflecting on Christ’s command “Ephphatha”—“Be opened”—to the deaf and mute man, the preacher presents healing as both restoration and a call to self-expression. Through his own story of overcoming childhood anxiety about public speaking, he urges Christians to move beyond their comfort zones, share their God-given gifts and enter more fully into communion with the body of Christ.
