Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Khachverats)

Այս տոնը կկոչվի Խաչվերած։ Խաչվերած տոն է, և երբեմն ովքեր իրենց պատմությունը լավ չեն գիտեն, չեն գիտեն ինչի մասին է Խաչվերածը։ Մենք գիտենք, որ Սուրբ Խաչի մասին է, և կսա էլ Սուրբ Խաչի տոն է, սակայն ինքը հստակ ծագում ունի, և այդ ծագումը գտնվում է մեր վաղ եկեղեցու պատմության մեջ։ Հիմնավորված է երկու կարևոր դեպքերի վրա։ Առաջին դեպքը այն է, երբ Սուրբ Հեղինեն Սուրբ քաղաքի մեջ՝ Երուսաղեմում, գտավ բուն խաչը։ Եվ երկրորդ դեպքը տեղի ունեցավ շատ ժամանակ անց, երբ այդ նույն խաչը փրկվեց պարսիկներից, որովհետև պարսիկները գողացել էին, և հավատացյալ ժողովուրդը կարողացավ փրկել խաչը նրանցից և վերադարձնել Սուրբ քաղաքը։ Ուրեմն այս երկու դեպքերը կհիշվի, սակայն այսօր շեշտը պիտի դնենք առաջին դեպքի վրա, երբ Սուրբ Հեղինեն գտավ բուն խաչը, որովհետև այս դեպքը շատ կարևոր էր։ Ամբողջ քրիստոնեության պատմության ընթացքին գլխավոր դեպքերից մեկն էր, որ նշանն էր քրիստոնեության լայն ձևով ընդունելության աշխարհի մեջ, որովհետև դրանից առաջ շատ ավելի դժվար էր վաղ քրիստոնյաների համար։ Երբ Սուրբ Հեղինեն ճանապարհ ելավ, չնայած որ ինքը կայսրուհին էր և աշխարհի ամենաուժեղ կինն էր, ինքը օգտագործեց իր ժամանակը, իր դրամը, իր ամեն ինչը որպես այս հեղինակավոր անձ՝ գտնելու բուն խաչը, որ մինչև այդ կորսված էր։ Եվ գնաց Երուսաղեմ և ուր գտավ Հիսուսի խաչը։ Կարևոր է այսօրվա համար՝ գնաց և դաշտի մեջ, ուր որ ռեհան աճում էր, այդ ծաղիկների մեջ խաչը գտավ։ Ասիկա հրաշք է, որովհետև չեն կարող երևակայել, որ այս մեծ քաղաքի մեջ բուն խաչը այդպես պառկած էր դաշտի մեջ և հարյուր տարիներով մարդիկ չէին տեսել, բայց հայտնվեց Սուրբ Հեղինեին և հայտնվելով՝ ինքը գտավ աղբյուրը մեր կյանքի, բոլորիս և իրեն, բայց իր հավատքն էր, որ պահանջեց, որ ինքը նվիրի իր կյանքը այդ նպատակի համար։ Այսօր այս տոնով՝ Խաչվերացի տոնով, մենք կկոչվենք նույն նպատակին՝ գտնել խաչը, բուն խաչը մեր կյանքներու մեջ։ Ինչպե՞ս կգտնենք։ Կարող ենք, այո՛, Սուրբ Հեղինեի պես երթալ Երուսաղեմ՝ սուրբ քաղաքը, և այնտեղ տեսնել մեր եկեղեցու հիմքերը, ակնտես լինել այս կարևոր տեղերը, որոնց մեծ մասը մեր եկեղեցու խնամակալության տակ են, սակայն մենք կգտնենք բուն խաչը մեր առօրյա կյանքի մեջ, որովհետև Հիսուս ըսավ. «Ովքեր կուզեն ինձի հետևել, ովքեր կամենան ինձի հետևել, պետք է ինձին մերժե, պետք է իր խաչը առնե և ինձի հետևե»։ Ատիկա կնշանակե, որ կա խաչ մը ինձի համար, ձեզի համար, բոլորիս համար։ Այս խաչը կա և գտնելի է։ Մենք կարող ենք փնտրել և գտնել այդ խաչը մեր կյանքի մեջ։ Խաչը Հիսուսի օրերը հաճելի բան չէր, ասիկա չարչարության և ցավի գործիք էր, սակայն իր զոհողությամբ, իր սիրով և ողորմությամբ ինքը դարձավ սիրո նշան և սիրո գործիք։ Երբ մենք գտնենք խաչը մեր կյանքի մեջ, առօրյա կյանքի մեջ, ողորմություն ցույց տալու մեր քույրերուն, եղբայրներուն հանդեպ, սիրելով, առատաձեռն լինելով, պաշտելով եկեղեցվո մեջ, ճանաչելով Հիսուսը Սուրբ Կուրության մեջ, երբ մենք գտնենք այդ խաչը, ուրեմն այն ատեն կհասկանանք՝ ինչ կնշանակե, երբ Ավետարանի մեջ գրված էր Հիսուսի խոսքը, երբ ըսավ, որ երկնքի թագավորությունը կնմանե, երբ մարդը գտավ անքան մարգարիտ մը և իր ամբողջ ունեցածը ծախեց, որ ինքը գնե։ Ասիկա այս աշխարհական կյանքի մեջ իմաստ չունի, բայց հոգևոր անձին համար ամեն ինչ է։ Ուրեմն արժե ժամանակը, ամեն ինչը, որ մենք ունինք, նվիրենք այդ նպատակին՝ գտնել խաչը։ Այսօր ներկա ըլլալով այս պատարագին, դուք, վստահ եմ, եթե ոչ ամբողջությամբ, մի մաս հայտնաբերած եք այս պատարագի ընթացքին, որովհետև մենք խաչի կյանքի մեջ կգտնվենք։ Սիրելինե՛ր, ասիկա իմ խրատը ձեզի, ասիկա գործածեցեք որպես առիթ, որ դուք դառնաք Սուրբ Հեղինեի պես այդ փնտրող անձնավորություն, որ ձեր կյանքի ընթացքին նվիրվիք այդ նպատակին՝ սուրբ խաչը, բուն խաչը գտնել և փառաբանել խաչվերացի միջոցով՝ վեր հանելով այդ խաչը մեր կյանքների մեջ, որ մենք նշան ըլլանք աշխարհին Աստծո սիրո լույսին։ Անուն Հոր և Որդվո և Հոգույն Սրբո, ամեն։

My beloved Sunday school children, can you please join me up here because I’m gonna need your help after we proceed into the courtyard for our Antasdan service. We’ve missed you guys all summer long while Sunday school was in hiatus, and I know that you guys have been all over the world. You’ve been to Armenia. I know many of you have been to Armenia, right, Sako? Did you love it? I know that you did. And some of you guys have visited many other places. However, you are back in your spiritual home, St. John, for a new year of Sunday school under the leadership of your teachers who are here present today, which I am very excited for. Now, today, as I was mentioning, is a special day in the church called Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Khachverats is what we say in Armenian. Now, I don’t know if you guys had a discussion about this in class today, a little bit, itty bitty bit of it. I am not testing you, but I’m just kind of looking for your feedback here. What do you think exaltation means? When we say it’s the exaltation of the cross. When you find it, you do have to find the cross. When you find the cross, you can exalt it. That’s very important, but that word isn’t a word that we use in English every day. What does it mean that we exalt something? To celebrate it. Yes, celebration is an important part of exaltation. What else? Anybody else have any suggestions? This is a vocabulary exploration. Any other ideas of how you can exalt something? No? Well, one of the key things to exalt something is to hold it up. A big thing about exaltation is you can’t really celebrate it, you can’t show how happy you are for it and how wonderful it is that you found it unless you hold it up. Have you guys ever seen The Lion King? You remember when they hold Simba up like this? They’re like exalting the prince, Simba. In the church, a day like today when we exalt the Holy Cross, it means that we’re holding up the cross and we’re celebrating it. We’re putting it over us and us underneath it. Now, Mane was right. Today is a day when we celebrate finding the cross and the first time that the cross was exalted. So when do you think they found the cross? Yes, Mellie. The seventh century? Oh my gosh, your history is out of control. Yes. That’s when they found it the second time, because it had been stolen. But when did they find it the first time? Anybody know? Well, today we remember a time in the 300s, so a long time ago, when the Holy Cross was found in Jerusalem by a lady named Saint Helena. Saint Helena was actually a very powerful woman who was an empress. She was the mother of the Emperor Constantine. Now, here’s what I think is interesting. Why did she have to find it? Where did it go? I mean, Jesus was crucified on the cross, right? Why didn’t they just keep track of it when it happened? Why did they have to find it so many years later? To put it back where it belongs? Well, it wasn’t really gone from where it belonged. Actually, where they found it is where they ended up building a lot of the sacred buildings, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and everything that you see today when you go to Jerusalem. So it was where it belonged. What else do you guys think? Why do you think they had to find it? Well, it was lost. Nobody knew where it was. You gotta find things that are lost. You gotta go looking for them. And for a long time, people weren’t looking for it. What it takes is somebody who really loves the cross to go and find it. But Christ tells us in the Bible, “Those who seek shall find, and those who are lost will be found.” So He wants us to go looking for the cross then and now. It’s an important thing for us to do in our lives. Now, when Saint Helena found the cross, she found it lying in a field of this. Do you guys know what this is called? Basil, right? She found it lying in a field, not like cleaned and cut like this, but in a field of wild basil. She found the cross, and I like to imagine that when she found the cross lying in this field of basil that was growing and flowering, you know what it probably looked like? It probably looked like a khachkar. Have you guys ever seen a khachkar before? Khachkar, there’s always a cross in the middle, but it’s never just a cross. There’s always a bunch of other stuff around it, right? Like these khachkars here, and the big one outside. When you look at a khachkar, it’s never just a cross, but there’s so much life coming out of it. Just like it was in that field with the wild basil fragrantly growing, life was coming out of that space where the cross was found. And so when we find the cross in our own lives, it also brings us joy, and life, and energy, and love, and happiness, and everything that Christ wants us to have in our lives so we can be content. Now, where do you guys think you can look for the cross, just like Saint Helena did? Is there a place where you think you could find a cross? So what Lena was saying is she thinks that you could find the cross in a serene place, in a natural place. And you know what I love about your answer, Lena, is that I think that you’re right in that you can find the cross where there’s peace. And some people can find peace in those places, but not everybody’s able to go so far away to find something that they need. Some of us, we’ve gotta find it where we are. But where can we find peace where the cross might be? Places where we are living that are also peaceful, like maybe the church. The church is usually pretty peaceful, right? A lot of people come to the church to find their peace because in the church they can encounter the cross. But not just there. There are places outside of the church where we can find the cross, too. What did Jesus do on the cross? You can find it in your homes, definitely, when we love one another, right? And when we’re ready to help one another and serve. Because the cross became for us life because Jesus died on it. He died on that cross, which was a sacrifice. Sacrifice because He loved us very much. And when we’re willing to sacrifice, too, for others that we love, that’s a place where we can find the cross. When we help our moms and our dads, when we show patience towards our brothers and sisters, and help them even, too, if that’s possible, that’s a special place where we can find the cross.
